Clarion FAQs

What is Clarion?

Clarion is a 4th generation language (4GL) business application development system that contains native drivers for over a dozen different data file types and sources including desktop, sql, ODBC and ADO layers. Clarion is an award winning Integrated Development Environment (IDE) which uses innovative template technology to produce "boiler-plate" code thus increasing productivity while greatly decreasing the chance for errors.

I have never heard of Clarion, is it new?

Clarion has been here for over 20 years and is still going strong. Clarion is the result of an idea for a "better mousetrap" by Bruce Barrington, the original creator of the language. In the early 1980's he released Clarion which has grown into the feature rich business application development tool that we publish today.

What types of developers use Clarion ?

Clarion developers come in all shapes; from Independant Software Developers, to IT departments in corporations and government agencies. Clarion is so easy to use that even non-programmers can build their own database applications.

Do I have to pay a royalty to sell or distribute programs written in Clarion?

No, Clarion produces natively compiled executable windows programs and DLL's. You may distribute the programs you create royalty-free.

I am a student and want to know if there is a less expensive version available?

I have never written a program before, is Clarion simple enough for me to get started?

Yes, Clarion is unique in the software tools industry in that you can develop complete business applications without writing a single line of code, in addition you have complete control of the code and can do everything "by hand".

What do you do to ensure that I do not outgrow Clarion?

SoftVelocity continually improves the core Clarion product to ensure that you can compete in the ever changing IT marketplace. We also provide enhancements in the form of add-on templates and libraries that are targeted for specific features or markets, like our Clarion/ASP code generation system.

I want to create "internet" applications, can Clarion help?

If "internet" applications is defined as being able to operate utilizing TCP/IP for data access or being able to produce pages to be rendered in a browser*, then yes. *requires optional library

I have an old DOS version of Clarion and would like to try the latest release, is there an upgrade available?

Yes, you can contact Sales or your distributor for specific options.

I have an existing application written in Clarion Professional Developer, is it possible to make this a windows program?

Yes, a strong feature of Clarion for nearly 20 years is that the language has maintained a high level of backward compatibility. Aside from the obvious platform differences between DOS and windows, over 90% of the language statements can often be used without change.

My existing Clarion DOS based application needs to be converted to windows, can you help?
